How to remove a broth stain:
A transparent menace that won't go away after washing
Story of a lifetime
"I was making homemade chicken broth and while pouring a few drops landed on the white linen tablecloth. I dried it with a napkin and thought it would be fine. But after washing, a greasy map appeared. Only baking soda, lemon and our laundry paper helped. The tablecloth is as good as new."
- Martina, EcoHaus customer
Why broth stains are not just "water"
Broth is tricky because it looks clear. But it contains:
- fat from meat or bones
- Protein and collagen, which adhere to the fibers
- salt, spices and herbs that can leave a colour or odour
A broth stain oxidises, darkens and often 'comes out' after washing - especially on light coloured fabrics.
How to treat a broth stain step by step
What helps:
- lukewarm water (not hot)
- Baking soda
- Citric acid or lemon juice
- White vinegar 10%
- EcoHaus Washing Papers
- Sodium percarbonate - ideal for white laundry
Procedure:
- If the broth is fresh, dry gently with a napkin, do not press.
- Rinse the spot with lukewarm water on the reverse side to get the grease out.
- Sprinkle baking soda on top, drizzle with lemon or citric acid solution.
Why it works: Soda draws out grease, acid breaks down protein and odor. - Leave on for 10-20 minutes, gently wash off.
- Wash with EcoHaus washing papers - gentle programme 30-40 °C.
- For white tablecloths or blouses, add sodium percarbonate.
Why it works: Active oxygen cleans grease residues and brightens the fabric.
What to watch out for
- Don't heat the stain right away. The fat and protein will bake in.
- Don't wash without pre-treating. The broth can soak in and leave a stain after washing.
- Don't believe water = no problem. Broth is like a fine oil perfume - it stays even if you can't see it.
➙ Tip from Grandma Petra
A combination of soda and lemon helps with broth stains. For white laundry, add percarbonate and leave to dry in the sun - the light helps finish the job.
➙ Tip from Vlaďka - the cleaning lady
If the broth leaves a greasy spot, sprinkle it with baking soda, drizzle with vinegar and let it "bubble". Then straight into the washing machine with paper - and percarbonate if it's a tablecloth or a light-coloured T-shirt.
Recommended products:
- Baking soda
- Citric acid
- White vinegar 10% - 1 l
- EcoHaus Washing Papers
- Sodium percarbonate
