How to remove a protein drink stain

When a healthy lifestyle is printed on a t-shirt

A story from life

"I had vanilla protein in my shaker and some splashed on my husband's shirt. After it dried, it left a yellowish stain and a weird smell. Lemon soda, vinegar and our tissue paper helped. The shirt was as good as new - and my husband didn't even notice."

- customer Klara

Protein drink is a great body wingman, but it doesn't do such a good job on clothes. Whether it's a spilled shake after a workout, a splash of cream while getting ready, or the drip from a child's chin, protein stains tend to be subtle but insidious.

They show up on textiles as:

  • dull, sometimes slightly greasy or yellowish stains,
  • may look inconspicuous at first but darken after drying or washing,
  • contain milk proteins, sweeteners, flavourings and dyes,
  • if not washed immediately, they become smelly and oxidised, especially in warm places.

But don't worry - with the EcoHaus approach and best practice you can do it organically, without chemicals, and most importantly - reliably.

Why protein stain is a challenge

  • Contains whey, casein, vegetable protein (pea, rice), sweeteners and flavourings,
  • it absorbs and dries quickly,
  • dairy ingredients oxidize and turn rancid,
  • can leave both a colour and an odour which only appears after drying.

How to stain a protein drink step by step

What helps:

Procedure:

  1. Do not wipe off a fresh stain, just gently blot with a cloth or napkin.
  2. Sprinkle with baking soda, drizzle with lemon - leave for 30-40 min.
  3. Apply a cloth with a solution of vinegar and water (1:1), leave for another 15-20 min.
  4. For light fabrics, add sodium percarbonate when washing.
  5. Wash with EcoHaus wash cloths, programme max. 40 °C.
  6. Add lemon essential oil to the soak - it removes residues and smells nice.

What not to do

  • Do not tumble dry before washing. The smell and the dye will bake in.
  • Do not iron the stain. The proteins will set in deeply.
  • Do not wash without pre-treatment. The stain and the smell will remain.

➙ Tip from Grandma Petra

Protein is invisible, but you can tell after a while - especially the smell. It's best to go for it now. Lemon soda, vinegar wrap and tissue paper will do the trick even with an older stain.

➙ Tip from Vlaďka - the cleaning lady

With protein, it's not just the colour I'm dealing with, it's the smell. That's why always soda, lemon, vinegar - and finally lemon oil in the soaking. Not a trace of it remains.
