When a sweet moment leaves a mark
A story from life
"Honey dripped on my cotton shirt at breakfast. I didn't deal with it right away, the stain was barely visible - but after washing it, a yellowish spot remained. Lemon, soda, vinegar and our paper solved it. It's as good as new again!"
- customer Hanka
Honey - a sweet friend in the kitchen but a sticky enemy on fabric .
Honey on clothes means:
- A sticky, shiny stain that is visible at first , but hardly visible after it dries,
- contains natural sugars (glucose, fructose), pollen, enzymes and trace elements,
- over time, it may solidify, caramelise or even ferment,
- and if the substance is washed out without pre-treatment, it remains as a "sweet shadow" or a rancid stain.
Luckily, we have a proven eco procedure that will get rid of the honey even with a smile on your face.
Why honey is tricky
- It's highly sticky - it penetrates the fibres, even if the stain looks superficial,
- contains sugars and enzymes that can react with sweat and heat,
- hardens when it dries, but dissolves and spreads againwith heat ,
- if washed incorrectly, leaves a sticky surface or a yellowish shadow.
How to make a honey stain step by step
What helps:
- A cloth or paper napkin to blot the honey
- Baking soda
- Lemon juice or citric acid
- White vinegar 10% - neutralizes sugar residue
- Sodium percarbonate - for light fabrics
- EcoHaus Washing Papers
- Lemon or tea tree essential oil
Procedure:
- Squeeze out as much honey as possible with a cloth or spoon - but don't rub.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the area, drizzle with lemon and leave for 30 min.
- Apply a cloth with a solution of white vinegar and water (1:1) - leave for another 15 min.
- For white/light fabrics, add sodium percarbonate to the wash.
- Wash with EcoHaus washing papers - gentle programme.
- Add a few drops of lemon essential oil to the soak - for freshness and finishing.
What not to do
- ❌ Do not use hot water before cleaning. The honey will caramelise.
- ❌ Do not iron. You'll fix the sugar and enzymes.
- ❌ Don't delay cleaning. After a few days, the honey solidifies and ferments.
➙ Tip from Grandma Petra
Always lemon, soda and vinegar on honey. And then the paper. If the stain is older, leave the mixture on longer or repeat. It also works on tablecloths or cloth bags.
