How to remove a citrus stain:
What really works

Why citrus leaves traces only later

Orange, lemon or grapefruit juice is clear, but contains fruit acids and sugars that oxidize when dried, leaving yellow to gray stains. They are especially dangerous on white or light-colored clothing. The stain may only "emerge" after the first wash or when exposed to heat.

How to remove an orange stain step by step

What will help:

  1. cold water
  2. Baking soda
  3. Citric acid or lemon juice
  4. EcoHaus laundry paper
  5. Sodium percarbonate – for white laundry
  6. White vinegar 10%

Procedure:

  1. Rinse the stain immediately with cold water, ideally from the back side.
  2. Apply a paste of baking soda and lemon juice or diluted citric acid to the area. Why it works: The soda releases sugar residues, the acid neutralizes and breaks down oxidized juice residues.
  3. Leave on for 10-15 minutes, rub in gently.
  4. Wash with EcoHaus laundry paper at 30–40 °C.
  5. For light or white clothes, add sodium percarbonate when washing. Why it works: Active oxygen whitens and brightens even subtle yellow shades.

What to watch out for

  1. Don't wait. The sooner the citrus juice is treated, the less chance the pigment will oxidize.
  2. Do not use hot water upon first contact. The stain will bake in.
  3. Do not wash without pre-treatment. The stain may appear more prominent after washing.

➙ Tip from Grandma Petra

A combination of cold water, lemon and hydrogen peroxide has always worked for citrus stains – especially on white linen or cotton. A short soak before washing is enough.
