How to remove a spinach stain:
Green that stays? Not if you know how to do it

A story from life

"I was cooking spinach and potatoes for my little one when he reached into his mouth and then right onto the spot. I thought the greens would go down easy. But after washing it, there was a grey-green spot. Fortunately, my grandmother told me a proven trick, and the stain disappeared completely."

- Eliška, EcoHaus customer

Why the spinach stain is so tricky

Spinach contains chlorophyll and natural green dyes that turn into greyish pigments when they dry or are exposed to light and air. In addition, it is often combined with fat (butter, oil) in snacks, which contributes to deeper staining of the fibres. Conventional detergents usually cannot cope with this.

Step by step on how to stain spinach

What helps:

Procedure:

  1. Gently remove spinach residue, do not rub.
  2. Rinse the stain with cold water on the reverse side.
  3. Apply a paste of baking soda and lemon juice (or citric acid with water). Why it works: the baking soda pulls out the grease residue, the acid breaks down the green pigments.
  4. Leave on for 10-20 minutes, gently wash off.
  5. Wash with EcoHaus wash cloths on eco programme 30-40°C.
  6. For white clothes, add sodium percarbonate. Why it works: Active oxygen will brighten the fabric and help remove oxidised dye.

What to watch out for

  • Don't use hot water when pre-treating. The green pigment is fixed by heat.
  • Don't wait. Dried spinach juice darkens and is harder to remove.
  • Don't try bleach. They can cause a chemical reaction and leave a yellowish shadow.

➙ Tip from Grandma Petra

Lemon or vinegar helps with spinach - ideally right after eating. Soak, sprinkle with soda and gently rub with your fingers. Old spots will be brightened again by percarbonate if left to soak overnight.

➙ Tip from Vlaďka - the cleaning lady

If the spinach leaves a dingy tinge even after washing, try applying white vinegar, massaging lightly and washing with washing paper. Combined with percarbonate of soda for white linen works great.
