When breakfast doesn't hit your mouth
A story from life
"My daughter put her fruit yoghurt on her lap at snack time - and of course it toppled over. The sweatshirt was spotty, sticky, and still smelled weird after washing. Lemon soda, vinegar and EcoHaus paper helped. Sweatshirt as good as new - and a catalog experience!"
- Renata, EcoHaus customer
Yoghurt is an "innocent" stain at first glance - but once it dries, it can turn grey, stale and set into the fibres if you don't handle it right.
Yoghurt leaves a stain on clothes:
- a white to yellowish, often almost invisible trace,
- that hardens and stickswhen it dries ,
- contains protein, fat and milk sugar,
- and mayremain permanently as a stain or odourwhen heated or washed without pre-cleaning.
But don't worry - even yogurt can be handled naturally, gently and effectively, whether it's a fruit cup or homemade Greek cream.
Why yoghurt is tricky
- It contains fat, protein and sugar
- it hardens and binds to the fibresas it dries
- hot washing shrinks the proteins and sets them.
- fruit yoghurts also contain dyes and juices that colour the fabric
How to stain yoghurt step by step
What helps:
- A clean cloth or spoon to remove the residue
- Baking soda
- Citric acid or lemon juice
- 10% white vinegar
- Sodium percarbonate - for light fabrics
- EcoHaus Washing Papers
- Lemon/Tea Tree Essential Oil
Procedure:
- Remove yogurt residue with a spoon or cloth - gently, do not rub.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the area, drizzle with lemon juice, leave for 30 min.
- Apply a cloth soaked in a solution of water and vinegar (1:1) - leave for 15 min.
- For white/light fabric, add sodium percarbonate to the wash.
- Wash with EcoHaus wash cloths on delicate programme.
- Add a few drops of lemon essential oil to the soak.
What not to do
- Do not wash immediately without pre-cleaning. The grease and proteins will set.
- Do not use hot water. The milk proteins will "congeal" in the fibre.
- Do not iron. The stain will lock.
➙ Tip from Grandma Petra
Yogurt is tricky - especially when it dries out. But lemon, soda, vinegar and tissue paper will do the trick. For fruit yogurt, I'll happily do it twice. The result is always clean.
➙ Tip from Vlaďka - the cleaning lady
For yoghurt I always start with a dry spoon, then lemon soda, vinegar and tissue paper. I do this almost all the time with the kids - and the fabric is always spotless and odourless.
