How to remove a grape stain:
Purple stain without chemicals? It can be done
A story from life
"My daughter took a grape wine snack to preschool. In the afternoon, she brought in a t-shirt with two dark spots on it - she said she leaned on it during snack time. The stains were purple and even darker after washing. I tried baking soda, lemon, and laundry paper - the shirt is now as good as new. And most importantly - stress-free."
- Michaela, EcoHaus customer
Why grapes continue to stain after washing
Grape wine contains natural dyes (especially anthocyanins) and sugar. The stain is often not pronounced at first - just a slightly damp map. However, it darkens to purple or brown as it dries. If not dealt with right away, the pigment gets deep into the fibers. Speed and a gentle approach are therefore important.
How to treat a grape stain step by step
What helps:
- Cold water
- Baking soda
- Citric acid or lemon juice
- EcoHaus Washing Papers
- Sodium percarbonate - ideal for white or light-coloured laundry
- White vinegar 10%
Procedure:
- Rinse the stain with cold water as soon as possible - from the reverse side.
- Pour baking soda directly on the stain, sprinkle with lemon juice or a mixture of citric acid and water. Why it works: the soda pulls the pigment out of the fibres, the acid breaks it down. Leave on for 15-20 minutes, gently blot.
- Wash with EcoHaus wash cloths on regular eco programme.
- For light-coloured laundry, add sodium percarbonate to the wash cycle. Why it works: Active oxygen removes remaining pigment and brightens the fabric.
What to watch out for
- Don't use hot water. The pigment is fixed by the heat and the stain will "bake".
- Do not leave the stain until the next day. The longer it stays, the more it soaks in.
- Do not try bleach. They may change the colour of the stain to grey or yellow, but not remove it.
➙ Tip from Grandma Petra
Lemon has always helped with purple juice - ideally fresh. Lightly dab the stain, add baking soda, rub between your fingers and then straight into the washing machine. Nothing was left on the light colored laundry.
➙ Tip from Vlaďka - the cleaning lady
Let the grape wine stain soak for a while in water with lemon and washing paper. If a shadow remains, lightly rub with vinegar, leave for a few minutes and finish with percarbonate of soda.
